As Product Owners (PO’s), we are accountable for ensuring that the products and services we develop are successful in meeting our customer’s needs and business goals, while at the same time, we play a central role in managing both our stakeholder’s expectations and our team’s development efforts. To make the lives of the Product Owners easier, over the past eight years while coaching 300+ Product owners, I have developed the ultimate Product Owner 1-pager (see below for a FREE download).

The Product Owner 1-pager is developed from the Product Owner’s perspective (not perse the product itself). It contains the most essential information about your work regarding the product or service you are managing and visualizes it for your stakeholders and teams, making your job hopefully a little bit easier.

The Product Owner 1-pager consists of the following:

Product Vision: Product Vision defines the future state of a product. It provides a clear and concise direction for product development, outlining the product’s purpose and desired outcome. It guides product decisions and provides an overall roadmap for product evolution. Product Vision should be based on customer needs and market trends, emphasizing innovation and differentiation. A good product vision can help a team stay focused and motivated while positioning the product to meet customer needs and succeed in the market.

Tip: Preferably use a short statement here, for example“Tesla of Bicycles, but more affordable” (i.e. we make affordable high-tech and connected electric bikes). In addition, you might use Geoff Moore’s Value Positioning Statement to create a more comprehensive version of your Product vision.

Target Audience: The target audience should include those who will benefit from the product, such as customers, partners, and internal users. Identifying the target audience helps to ensure that the product is tailored to meet their needs and expectations.

Tip: Narrowing down your target audience will enable your teams to design more relevant solutions. Use personas to create more empathy in your teams for your target audience.

Top 3 Success Metrics: The three most important success metrics should be identified in order to measure the progress of the product. These metrics should be based on customer feedback, market performance, and overall usage.

Tip: Select metrics that you can directly measure/access yourself and which will help you to adjust your priorities and strategies.

Main Stakeholders: The main stakeholders should be identified to ensure that they are actively engaged throughout the product development process. They may include key users/customers, internal teams, and other interested parties.

Tip: Select the stakeholders with whom you can actively collaborate (invite them to refinements and/or Sprint reviews to get feedback).

Upcoming Business Milestones: Upcoming business milestones should be set to track your product’s progress and ensure that it meets business goals. These may include deadlines for customer feedback, moving to a new market segment, and achieving new levels of customer satisfaction.

Tip: Think about outcomes (App is launched in two new countries), not about specific features to be built.

The Product Owner 1-pager helps you to manage and monitor your product’s progress and have the most essential information always at hand to manage your stakeholders and teams more effectively.
